01 · The Big Picture

The city’s net worth

Every year, Orinda’s auditors total up everything the city owns minus everything it owes — its net position. Here’s the whole fifteen-year ride, straight from the audited reports.

Ending net position per fiscal year, as published in each year’s audit (Table 2). Dots mark the biggest one-year jump and any declines; ✱ marks a figure the city later restated.

02 · Money In

Where the money comes from

Property taxes, fees for services, grants from other governments — every dollar in, stacked by source. Tap a band (or its chip) to follow one stream and see how fast it grew.

Total revenues by category. Before FY2017, transfer tax is included in Franchise Taxes (the city reported them combined); investment income includes rent and realized/unrealized gains in early years.

03 · The Tax Deep-Dive

Our tax sources

Five taxes do most of the heavy lifting, and one of them does more every year. Tap a mini-chart to expand it; the indexed view puts all five on the same starting line so growth rates compare directly.

04 · Money Out

Where the money goes

Police, roads, parks, planning, and the cost of running city hall. Roads are the big story in Orinda — watch the gold band.

Total expenses by department, as reported. Tap a band to isolate it.

05 · In vs. Out

Surplus or deficit?

Lay revenue and spending side by side and the gap is the year’s bottom line. Gold years added to the city’s net worth; red years drew it down.

Paired bars: total revenues vs total expenses per year. The strip beneath shows the difference.

06 · The Restatement Ledger

When the numbers change

Prior-year figures sometimes get revised in the next report. We track every one — neutrally, completely, and in the city’s own numbers.
